When the basket wall first hit the home decor world, I was in love from day one. I adore it’s aesthetic and how they can create a VERY inexpensive DIY gallery wall feature. If you are looking for an affordable way to spruce up a boring wall, add some dimension to your space, or are simply looking for a more boho look… you MUST install a basket wall! They will forever and always make a big statement on any space. Adding woven baskets to a wall in your living space provides a unique & fun interior design element that all eyes will gravitate towards!
Variety is the Spice of Life
Another reason why I adore basket wall art is because they are truly unique. No one wall will ever look the same. There are thousands and thousands of different styles of baskets, colors, shapes, and sizes of baskets so even in your own home decor you can make multiple walls look entirely different. Let’s dive in!
Make a Statement
One of the great things about using baskets as wall art is you can go as big & bold or sweet & subtle with your design. Depending on the space you are adding a gallery wall feature to, adding some color in would work as well. Again, because there is so much variety in what is available on the market for decorative wall baskets. It is an easy and affordable to make a an unexpected and eye-catching piece of art.
Make it Grow
Another fun aspect to consider is treating your gallery wall/s as an ongoing project. Once you put up your first wall basket set, don’t be afraid to add to it! Anytime you happen to find a new and unique basket, add it right in. Just keep adding to your collection as you FIND & DISCOVER!
Types of Decorative Wall Baskets
Like I said earlier, there are THOUSANDS of different baskets out there. There are woven baskets unique to specific areas of the globe, ones intended for specific purposes, ones used for and they come in every shape/color/and size imagineable. Personally, I think the best basket wall art are the ones incorporating a variety of different styles, colors, and shapes. For example, add the largest rattan basket you have next to a small wicker one, with a medium sized seagrass placement just next to them.
Or use the same type of material on each basket, but in different sizes, shapes, and styles.
Or keep things very simple in a small living space and add three seagrass baskets together.
Great sources for baskets:
Perhaps my favorite part of this post to share… SHOPPING for your wall baskets! Secondhand stores are probably the best source for baskets simply because everything will be budget-friendly.
- GoodWill
- Salvation Army
- Saint Vincent DePaul
- Local Mom & Pop antique stores (note prices may be marginally more in these types of stores)
Typically you will find baskets all in the same section at Thrift Stores, but every now and then you will need to dig and move things around on shelves to see something that might be hidden. For the most part though, you can find them near the larger storage baskets.
Another great source for a huge variety of home decor is Etsy for truly vintage baskets and Amazon for more simple options (placemats for example). The great thing about purchasing on this site is you can typically find really great looking curated collections. This takes the guess work out of your hunt. You can get everything you need for the area you are decorating in one easy shipment! The kicker is you will probably spend quite a bit more on these on Etsy than thrift stores.
When the basket wall trend started picking up steam, a lot of companies started producing their own varieties. Typically though, these are are going to be very pricey. It can be fun to add old & new, but don’t feel like you have to buy that new wall basket set from West Elm either!
Areas for a gallery wall feature:
Honestly, boho wall baskets can go anywhere (and everywhere) in your home. The main thing to be concerned with is the style of the rest of the space. If the aesthetic matches or if this look will compliment the decor that is already present, this feature could just bring everything together beautifully. For example, if you have a very formal dining room table with large, patterned winged back chairs, a collection of inexpensive looking wicker wall basket might clash.
Entryway
I LOVE this wall art in an entryway because it’s one of the first things you see when coming into the home. It just sets the tone for a unique & warm living space! Entryways are also typically smaller in size, so its a great place to test this home decor project out!

Planning Your Layout:
This part of the DIY project will probably take the longest (let’s say 10-15 minutes MAX). Instead of placing them on the wall immediately and having to move things around, just place your baskets on the floor. To be extra precise you can tape off an area the same size as your wall space, then build it and move things around on the ground.
- don’t be afraid to overlap
- try using your largest basket in the center and place small baskets around it
- for smaller spaces, stick to odd numbers (3, 5, or 7 baskets)
- have fun & don’t be afraid to try different combinations… this is YOUR room decor
Installing Your Gallery Wall:
The second hardest part of this project will be affixing your woven baskets to the wall (probably another 10 minutes MAX). With everything still laid out on the floor and in place, snap a picture of your layout. Then simply just start your wall hanging.
- start with flats first so you can layer on top of them if you like
- most people use small 3M Command hooks for their wall mount option
- or use tiny nails if you don’t mind the holes in your wall (this is my preferred method just because its easier for me)
- use a small piece of metal wire if your hanging wall basket is a bit odd shaped and not flush enough to the wall
Spice Things Up:
In addition to growing your collection of basket wall art, don’t be afraid to change things up and add other elements into your design. Adding in some faux plant clippings, moss, or florals will bring a touch of color & texture in.
You could also change things up seasonally for a fun plot twist to your room design. For Fall, add in some Autumn floral stems. For Christmas, add in some holly, bits of garland, and/or even tiny ornaments.
Are you convinced to try out your very own basket gallery wall yet? When you are short on time and on the hunt for a budget-friendly focal point for your space, consider using a basket wall as your original piece of art. Get on this easy DIY home decor trend ASAP friends!
